Basketball Lessons in Queens, NY: Where Kids Get to Shine

Through experience, we have learned that Individual attention goes a long way toward building self-esteem. Even a shy child wants to feel special and be recognized.

At First Shot Basketball School, when we work with our Supertots (ages 3-4) and our Pee Wee (ages 5-6), teach them several ball tricks in addition to the regular lessons. These tricks are designed to foster coordination and dexterity. Even more important than the built in benefit of handling the ball, is how we use these tricks to let each child shine.

During our Graduation/Award Day festivities, we give each child an opportunity to do a ball trick that they learned.  They take center-stage in the gym while his/her classmates and parents watch. What happens during that “all about me” moment gives the child a chance to  get special attention and receive applause for their efforts. The result is a child with a mile-wide smile.
After 26 years of teaching basketball, we have seen clear evidence of how our teaching methods bring kids out of their shell, feeling better about their performance, and becoming more eager to learn and participate in a group. For us, it starts with positive reinforcement. Everything we do at First Shot  is designed to build self-esteem; with the children coming away feeling “I can do this.”  Even our method of  instructing recognizes a child’s smallest achievement.
If a child misses a shot, we sandwich the instruction between two encouraging comments. For example,  “Nice try, I like the way you shot a high arc. Next time, bend your knees to give you more power when you shoot. “I know you can do it.”

Very often, we find that our confidence in their being able to succeed, overcomes the lack of confidence they may feel.

When it comes to teaching young children, our coaches are trained to engage the students and make it fun for them. When we hire our coaches, their personality is considered as much as their basketball skills.
Perhaps, when you find yourself at one of our classes,  you might hear a child ask, “But who won?” Our answer is “if you had fun, you won.”  Call us for more information at 718.275.7974.
