30 Aug Basketball Lessons in Queens….Coaching Does Make a Difference
Think about your best subject in school and how you learned it so well. Yes, you may have had a natural ability in Math or taken to science easily. But, having a teacher who taught the subject and made it interesting, with explanations you understood, certainly helped to inspire you. That is what great teachers do. At First Shot Basketball School, we think teaching the game properly is the key to becoming a good, confident player.
That’s why our instructors are not volunteers. They are experienced Basketball teachers who understand how to speak to children and how best to help them learn. Knowing how to make learning fun is just one of the qualifications a First Shot coach must have. Our method of instruction inspires our kids to achieve and makes them feel good about themselves and their performance. We think instilling a positive, can-do attitude makes all the difference in learning any subject, be it scholastic or sports.
We have achieved great success with our ”Sandwich” method which actually sandwiches the instruction between two positive statements. For example, when a child misses a shot, we’ll say “Nice try, Jason, I like the way you bent your knees. Next time, remember to point your fingers into the basket. I know you can do it. “
What the child hears is positive praise along with instruction, so the take away is, “I’m capable, I can do this.” Isn’t that what we want for our children. Our teachers have been trained to communicate kindly with our students. Our message to the children is always filled with support and an expectation that he/she will accomplish the task. With many students, we find that our confidence in them will overcome their lack of confidence in themselves.
